Preventive dentistry includes practices based on preventing the most common oral and dental diseases such as tooth decay and gingivitis before they occur.
The main ones are:
Fissure Covering Applications (Protective applications to prevent tooth decay) The indentations and protrusions on the surface of the teeth create a very suitable environment for the accumulation of food residues and microbes. overing these surfaces with a filler-like material (fissure sealant) with a transparent layer without removing any material from the tooth surface (such as walking around with an umbrella in the rain) is a very important protective process (70-80%) in preventing dental caries. Gels containing fluoride are applied to children by the pedodontist. Thanks to this application, the teeth become resistant to decay.
Fluoride and fissure sealant applications are recommended for children from the age of 6.
Fissure sealant applications are a fluid consistency that covers the chewing surfaces of the teeth and protects the teeth against decay. Studies show that 90% of dental caries start from small, deep and narrow recesses (fissures) on the chewing surfaces of molars. Since the tooth enamel is not fully calcified in the first eruption period, the newly erupted teeth become less resistant to decay. For this reason, Fissure Sealants are recommended to be applied in a short time after the teeth erupt. In the researches, it is said that the fissure sealant application prevents the formation of tooth decay by 85 – 90%.
Another important issue is flourid applications. Milk and permanent teeth absorb useful and harmful things like a sponge until the age of 15, that is, the maturation age of the teeth. Flourid applications applied until this age both prevent tooth decays and join the structure of the tooth and protect the tooth against external factors rather than a filling material.
